Captain Scott XI
Another hot June day, and for us a new venue, in the grounds of graceful Chiswick House. For once reachable by car in less than half a day!
On winning the toss, Scotties chose to bat first, and there followed 40 overs where neither bat not ball was ever truly on top. As soon as a partnership of theirs threatened, a wicket fell. All Butler bowlers chipped in, with some fine catching, to concoct one of the most pleasing Butler performances in the field for some time.
Their total of 252 felt gettable, and debutant Peter Evans and stylish Don Joyce got us off to a brisk start. Gilly and Brian added helpful but not quite match-winning scores at 3 and 4, and the game remained in the balance. Steve came in at 6 and managed to fashion a substantial partnership with Peter, the younger man now starting to accelerate and relish the prospect of a ton and a victory. And so it came to be. They were both there at the end, Peter possibly becoming the Butler’s first ever debutant centurion!
