Sunday, 17 May 2009
Result:
Captain Scott, Oxford
Details:
Butler XI 233 for 8 after 35 overs (B Wilkinson 83, S Taylor 39, S McCormack 34) Captain Scott XI 234 for 5 after 33.5 overs (J Weymes 2-37, J Dawson 2-13). Captain Scott win by 5 wickets.

After giving us a spanking last season, Captain Scott had put us down in their diary as a ’weaker’ side, encouraging their stronger players to save themselves for the tougher fixtures. What a shock they were in for!

New recruit Sam Taylor (thanks Lewis) teamed up with Ben Wilkinson to add more than 110 runs for the first wicket, sending their fielders on a dizzying series of errands. Later, Steve McCormack, James Weymes and Gilly Wiid added a healthy few dozen and even Lewis at number 10 chipped in with eight more.

Paul Daniels called his players round for a war cabinet during tea, drawing upon his inside knowledge of our bowling deficiencies. They were determined not to get themselves beaten by so-called weaklings.

Rupert Style and Daniel Watson (himself poached from our team by those unscrupulous Scotties a few years ago) added 124 for the first wicket and despite valiant fielding and disciplined bowling, they scraped home with just seven balls to spare. Next time they’ll maybe treat us with more respect, unfortunately!
